In the wine country of Brome-Missisquoi, in Farnham to be exact, is hidden the Vignoble les Pervenches. Since 2000, the operation has been owned by two dynamic winemakers, Véronique Hupin and Michael Marler. The vineyard has made a name for itself through the production of a Chardonnay variety, unique in Québec, and more recently by obtaining organic certification. The fruit of the vines is transformed into high quality wines, sold mostly to high-end restaurants throughout Québec and, in smaller amounts, to private collectors.

Since purchasing the vineyard in 2000, the winemakers have doubled the number of vines on the property and tripled their wine production. Today, the production area covers three hectares and the annual production averages 11,000 bottles. Investments have been made in a wine warehouse, tasting room and processing equipment.

This project highlights how the many aspects of production and transformation can impact on an operation’s financing needs. Vines are, of course, perennating crops that take many years to reach their full potential both in yield and quality and therefore limit earnings in the first years of production. Processing activities also require a maturation period before the product is ready for sale. The complementarity and flexibility of financial products provided by La Financière agricole and its partner financial institutions make it possible to offer financial packages tailored to specific constraints involving the production and transformation of agricultural products.
